For some reasons, doing social media detox is a great idea, but there are some other reasons why you should not do that anymore. Or at least, too much. Please have your seat here, listening to this old grandma speaking.
1. You need social media to live
We can’t undo technology development. It goes somewhere each day. People use social media to socialize in this era. You also read news mostly through the link/share on social media these days and I am not planning to be left out by the world. Not because the fear of missing out but I need to socialize to live. Man is a homo-socius, right? Take it away of your life, and you somehow feel empty. We, human, are called to socialize, to have a companion, to create a relationship and yes to maintain it, and, today we do it through social media.
2. You’re called to share.
Following my first point above, in order to maintain a relationship, you have to share. We share our thoughts, to sharpen others’ and be sharpened. We share our encouragement to strengthen others’ faith. We share our struggle, to be cheered & strengthened. We share jokes, to feel joy. We share dreams, to recognize hope. And yes, we share love, to love. A relationship lasts because we share, and we can do it through social media.
3. You love through social media.
What is the biggest and the most important thing among faith, hope, and love? It is love. If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
And believe it or not, social media is created for us also to love. Show your love when you see people’s need they’ve shown on social media. Don’t be busy judging them.
At least those are three reasons I found during my already half-way period of doing my social media detox. I feel drained. At first I thought this is a bad sign of me and my behavior, you know, am I taking social media use too much with bad motives or something?
But then I realize, it’s not. But commitment is a commitment, I will enjoy some days ahead still detoxing. I learn and experience many things tho lately.
